The Original 'A Family Supper and my Version

In the Short Story, 'A Family Supper' by Kazuo Ishiguro.

In the Original Short Story A Family Supper by Kazuo Ishiguro 1988. This Specific Short Story (1982)
Beginning:
Son arrives in Japan to see his father and sister. The son is the narrator. The son had come from California. He was living in California at the time of his mother’s death. The son returned to Tokyo 2 years later. ‘The poison resides in the sexual glands of the fish, inside two fragile bags. When preparing the fish, these bags must be removed with caution, for any clumsiness will result in the poison leaking into the veins’ (Ishiguro 1988: 434). The mother is dead, ‘Apparently, my mother had always refused to eat fugu, but on this particular occasion she made an exception, having been invited by an old school friend whom she was anxious not to offend’ (Ishiguro 1988: 434).

Middle:
Son, father, daughter have supper and talk about various topics: Should son go back to California? The sisters new boyfriend. Their mother.

End:
Narrator (son) and father waiting for Kikuo (sister) to bring them the tea.

My Version
Which is based on the Short Story, A Family Supper by Kazuo Ishiguro 1988.
What is the story you wish to tell?
A chef prepares fish in a kitchen. 4 People then eat the fish. The people get poisoned. The chef steals their watches and jewellery.

The Chef's Motive is VITAL to the Story

Why does the Chef hurt his customers?

Idea: The Customers ask: 'Where is the Salt?' 'Pass the Salt', 'This Fish is Off', 'Where the Ketchup?' 'Please pass the Ketchup'.

One Line Script Breakdown for March 2010 Film

10th and 11th December 2009

One Line Script Breakdown for the story based on 'A Family Supper' by Kazuo Ishiguro.

One Line Breakdown of each scene of My Version of this Short Story
During the 10th and 11th December 2009, I thought about, why did the Chef poison people? I thought that the Chef got severely told off by the people and the Chef had decided to take revenge by poisoning them.

At first I put in EXT = Exterior Shot and INT = Interior Shot. Later realised that EXT and INT did not go into Script Breakdowns. Earlier I had put in details about the Shots but then later realised that this was not necessary for a Script Breakdown.

Scene
View of the House.

Scene
In the Sitting Room, Chef getting severely told off by 4 people.

Scene
In the Kitchen, The Chef preparing the fish.

Scene
In the Dinning Room, Chef brings fish. The people eat and feel un well and collapse.

Post Production for Nov 2009 Film

I sent an email to some Music Students who are also Good Friends of mine.

'December 7 at 5:20pm
My Good Music Friends at Bath Spa University.

Ciaran and I have made a film for our 'Planning and Making a Film' Module. I have included him in this email, because he was been a great help and he will arrange a link to the film.

We need some Non Copyright Music (Royalty Free) Music for the film, please.

You all play instruments, please can we use some of your music for our film?

Please get in touch with Ciaran and I as soon as possible please.

I am afraid that our Deadline for finishing editing the film is next week!

Thank you all very much for all your help and support.

Alfred'

A number of people responded offering their music but unfortunately the music they were offering did not fit the style of the film. Although, they are still useful contacts to have for future films.

Ideas for Short Film in March 2010

These are a couple of my ideas for possible scripts in March 2010. My 1st idea is based on the Short Story, 'A Family Supper' by Kazuo Ishiguro. My 2nd idea is based on the short story, 'Airport Cafe' by Kate Barker and Melissa Cassidy.

1st Story Line:
A chef prepares fish in a kitchen. 4 People then eat the fish. The people get poisoned. The chef steals their watches and jewellery.

About:
People running a risk for pleasure.
(Risk:, Fugu is a fish eaten by the Japansese even though the poison rides in the sexual glands of the fish and if these are not removed very carefully before cooking, the fish is poisonous. 'Fugu poisoning is hudeously painful and almost always fatal'. The Japanese eat the fish despite this because it is prized as a dish).

Synopsis:
Begninning
Chef arrives in kitchen with fish in bag.
Bag is marked, 'Fugu'.
Chef prepares fish very carefully.
Another person comes into the kitchen and washes.
Chef mimes to the other persdon what would happen if a particular part of the fish was not removed.

Middle:
4 People including the one who was in the kitchen with the chef, sit round a dinning table.
Chef brings in cooked fish.
4 People eat fish having animated silent conversation.
As soon as fish is finished, people start to stimulate agony, writhing, fall on floor and die.

End:
Chef enters room, looks at corpses.
Chef looks at them nervously.
We are uncertain whether he has killed them by accident or intentionally.
Chef takes watches and Jewellery from the bodies.
We assume he is going to rob the house.

2nd Story Line:
5 people are waiting in an Airport Cafe. There is a man sitting on his own. People arrive and depart the cafe. The man on his own keeps on looking at his watch. After a while, there is the sound of an explosion. Everyone runs. The man on his own smiles to himself and leaves.

About:
The ordinary nature of Terrorism.

Beginning:
3 tables in a cafe are occupied by 5 people waiting.
Tabels are strewn with dead food cartons and empty cups.
Everybody looks very bored.
One of the tables has a man on his own looking just like the others.
Man on own drinks from can of coke, does a Sudokou puzzle and looks as bored as the others.

Middle:
2 people get up and leave taking suitcases that were at their feet.
2 more people come in with travelling bags and flop down at one of the tables.
Man on his own, yawns and looks at his watch.
People who have just arrived look at their watches.
Everyone looks up as if they are listening to an announcement.
After that, 2 more people hurry out looking at their watches.
Man on his own yawns again.
Puts down the Sudokou and reads a book.

End:
Everybody gets up and walks around aimlessly including the man on his own.
Noise from outside of a plane landing.
Man on his own looks at his watch again.
Sound of huge explosion.
Everyone except the man on his own rushes to one side of the room.
Man on his own smiles to himself, picks up his Backpack and slips away.

OCT / NOV 09 Class Meetings with Film Group

26th October 2009

During the class on Monday 26th October 2009, My Group and I decided to keep the ideas of:

STORY of our film:

The Theme is Desire. The Main character really wants a camera to make a film / an advert. The person is determined to get the camera by any means possible.

Start of our film:

Meeting: People preparing to make a film / an advert and realise they do not have a camera.

Meeting = Sinister Location (Grave Yard, Underground Car Park
Suspense = Maybe a Drug Deal
Shooting of the film = Seems suspicious to the audience.

THEN

3 events = final event could be immoral

Wrong type of camera (Disposable)

Accidental Damage to a new camera or the main character gets sent to a pointless location.

We decided to keep the CCTV idea and the idea that the main character steals the CCTV Camera.

We decided to keep the Montage idea = Quick Sequences, tells the story quicker until the CCTV Camera scene.

End of our film:

Low Battery. Camera shuts down.

OCT / NOV 09 Film Group Meetings in Town

1st November 2009

My Group and I met in Town. One of our members was absent.

I made notes on the rough outline of the script.

I made notes on the Locations list, Cast List and the Prop List. We have to speak to Chris Britton about borrowing props from Bath Spa University. We have to speak to Chris Jury of the Drama Department, c.jury@bathspa.ac.uk

Locations List:

High Street

Props List:

Guns
Disposable Camera
6mm Camera = Gus has one.
Mobile Phone
Web cam
Tripod
Clapper Board
Boom

Cast List:

Cameraman A
Cameraman B
2 Actors
A Security Guard = Can wear Black Jacket and Black Trousers.

We all agreed to meet on Wednesday 4th November, 7pm at KFC.

8th November

My Group and I met in Town.

I was brought up to speed. We were not going to be using Guns. Gus told me that he was going to be speaking to a manager of a Car Park on Monday 9th November.

My Director was angry at me, she said that I should have shown some initiative and emailed Chris Jury much earlier. She never actually told me to but on the other hand, I never asked her. None of the team had asked me to email Chris Jury. Poor Communication within the team!

Christina texted me saying that she will let us know on Monday about this filming weekend.

OCT / NOV 09 Lessons Learned and My Roles

The group had different Roles which contributed in different ways to the construction of the film.
Throughout the Production, I was joint Producer with Gus. On the day of shooting, I was the 'Stage Manager' which involved doing the Clapper Board and I was frequently checking our Shot List. I also acted in the film.

1. I should have emailed Chris Jury when Mike Johnston emailed the Producers asking them to email Chris. Why was their a delay? My emails had piled up and I simply forgot about Mike Johnston's email. Also I did not ask my team early enough whether I should email Chris Jury. On the other hand, my Director and the rest of the team never told me to email Chris Jury.

2. Actor Andy Creffield in Hungerford was interested in acting in our film. He did have a number of significant questions for us:

A. Where are the actors needed this Saturday and Sunday?
B. What do the actors need to wear?
C. Do the actors need to bring any props with them?
D. How long on Saturday and Sunday are the actors needed for?
E. How many actors are we using?
F. How many Male? How many Female?

Ciaran told me in response:

'the director should have that sorted. Check with her and see if she has a schedule sorted'. Neither the Director nor the team had sorted a fully detailed schedule before we met on Friday 13th November to collect the equipment.

OCT / NOV 09 Difficulties

28th and 29th October 2009

I found the Third scene where the boy steals the camera, a nightmare to write. I felt that my group and I had not explained this scene very well. I found myslef floundering on my own.

I also had trouble writing about the Fourth and final scene. My Group and I had not made this section clear either. I also felt that I was floundering on my own.

1st November 2009

My Group and I met in town. One of our members was absent.

4th November 2009

My Group and I had arranged to meet in town. I had put it in my diary. No one turned up, only the Director turned up.

I emailed my Group because I was worried. I was getting totally confused about my specific responsibilities. The Pressure had mounted. I felt that their had been a lack of communication within my filming group!

We had not finalised the script so I did not know How many actors to get. I did not know for sure, what Props we needed to arrange to get. I did not know what the actors had to look like.

I strongly suggested that we should have met meet during the Thursday and Friday of that week with Mike Johnston.

I strongly felt that we were behind.

Sun 8th November

My Group and I met in town.

My Director was angry at me, she said that I should have shown some initiative and emailed Chris Jury much earlier. She never actually told me to but on the other hand, I never asked her. None of the team had asked me to email Chris Jury. Poor Communication within the team!

Mon 9th November

Our Director was absent.

Tuesday 10th November

One of our potential actors asked me some difficult questions:

1. Where are the actors needed this Saturday and Sunday?

2. What do the actors need to wear?

3. Do the actors need to bring any props with them?

4. How long on Saturday and Sunday are the actors needed for?

5. How many actors are we using?

6. How many Male? How many Female?

One of my Film Mates told me in response:

'the director should have that sorted. Check with her and see if she has a schedule sorted'. Neither the Director nor the team had sorted a fully detailed schedule before we met on Friday 13th November to collect the equipment.

Friday 13th November

I discovered that I had not emailed Mike about confirming what equipment would be needing. Mike told us that the Producers had to email him. As a result, we could not get a second camera because of very short notice. On the Monday of that week, when I met my Film Group I asked them if it was confirmed that we were picking up our equipment on Friday 13th November. They told me not to worry, pick up of equipment was confirmed. My Director had not told me to email Mike.

Sunday 2nd Film day

Actor Jake, who was meant to be Character Ben and he did not turn up. He was meant to be an actor helping to make a film which was the film within the film.

There was heavy rain on Saturday 1st Filling day. Was not raining on Sunday (2nd Filming day) that proved to result in continuity problems.

We had to Re shoot a few shots on Sunday (2nd Filming day) because of the heavy rain on Saturday (1st Filming day)

'EXT. Street - day

POV of the camera running down the street, he finds an old camera in a bin. Using another montage sequence it shows him going back and forth from him running to the director. Each time with a new idea on how they can shoot the film.

the fast pace montage sequence stops, and is interrupted by the sound a phone ringing'.

On Sunday (2nd Filming day), one shot of CCTV Camera on the wall. We forgot to do this Saturday (1st Filming day) because it was getting very dark.

OCT/ NOV 09 Preparations for the Nov 2010 Filming Weekend

We all decided to call our film 'Man without a Movie Camera'. Based on the Original sory, 'what would u do 4 a pair of shoes', by Pascha Hanaway.

4th November 2009

I emailed my Group because I was worried. I was getting totally confused about my specific responsibilities. The Pressure had mounted. I felt that their had been a lack of communication within my filming group!

We had not finalised the script so I did not know How many actors to get. I did not know for sure, what Props we needed to arrange to get. I did not know what the actors had to look like.

I strongly suggested that we should have met during the Thursday and Friday of that week with Mike Johnston.

I strongly felt that we were behind.

My Group responded:

'Don't know why you feel as if we are behind. The Script is done, if you could use Celtx you would have it, I will transfer it to word. I am doing the shot list as we speak. I will send it over with the script in a couple of hours'.

'Actors we need? Cameraman A. Director'

'The rest of the actors in the film can be made up by friends, as opposed to people:
Cameraman B, Actor (x2),Security Guard, 3-5 extras'.

'What are their descriptions? Descriptions don't matter. Male or Female, tall or small'.

'How long are they going to be needed for on the Saturday 14th Nov and Sunday 15th Nov that we are filming? As a producer you should compile our schedule from the shot list, so you can figure it out from that'.

'Please can I have our Final Prop/Location List? Gus is sorting locations (speaking with a car park at the moment) and props have been done'.

6th November

I emailed Chris Jury. He is one of the people in charge of the Drama Department at Bath Spa University. I asked him:

'We would like some actors please for our filming weekend: Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November...I have attached our script...Chris, please can you get the actors to email us their phone numbers and their availability for the 14th and 15th November'.

7th November

I got a text from Christina who does acting at Bath Spa University. She was very interested in being in our film. She also asked me:

'Are you in need of female actors?'

9th November

Our Director was absent again.

My group and I made a practice film.

We followed a Shot List for a short film called: 'The Wrong Day'.

Short Film Research. Some Films Watched in Class

Shoes = The Bath Spa Section on Youtube called the 'Broadcast Lab'. Basically, this film is about a girl who really wants a pair of shoes. She tries working to earn the money to buy the shoes. However, eventually she steals money and buys the shoes

Opinions: Personally, I thought that this film was well made. The acting was excellent. I thought that this short film was a great inspiration for the short films that my class and I made in November 2009.

The main female character acted very realistically throughout this film. I think that a lot of the audience will identify with her because they might have been in very similar situations where they have really wanted something and they have had to work really hard to get it.

Personally, I thought that the music for this film was a little over the top. The music seemed a little over jolly.

'The Cutting Edge' watched on Monday 23rd Nov:
George Lucas said, 'editing is an art'. The film emphasised that the editor will probably spend most time with the Director. An important quote from the film was that Editing is 'putting the puzzle together'.

My Independent Short Film Research

1. 'The Lunch Date'
A Woman rushes for her train. A black man knocks into her. The woman refuses his help and she misses her train. The woman has lunch, a salad, but it looks like that another black man is eating her salad. He buys her a coffee. The man leaves and the woman sees a salad lying on the table. She catches a train.

Opinions: I personally really enjoyed watching this film. In some ways, this film was very similar to the film I Produced for ALevel called, 'I Never Eat Anything For Lunch' and its further down in this specific Blog Document.

In some ways, this Film is very powerful. The woman is in a hurry, runs into someone, misses her train and sheds a few tears. Some of the audience will identify with the main woman in this film because im sure that many of the audience will have been in her position. This film also seems to present the concept of racism. The woman does not let the black man help her pick up her things. The woman shares a salad with another black man because she and the audience believe that the black man ate her salad.

2. 'Vincent' - Tim. Burton. Short. Animation. 1982
The sad tale of Vincent Maloy who wants to be the same as his idle, Vincent Price.

Opinions: Personally, I found this to be a a very creative and inventive film. This was an Animation. This film was creepy but also exciting.

3. 'Dumping Elaine'
A man called Eddie wants to dump a woman called Elaine. Another woman called Beth is involved. Is Eddie using Elaine to hurt Beth? Is Beth using Eddie to get back at Elaine? Does Beth really love Eddie?

Opinions: I found this a realistic film. Some of the audience will identify with this 'Breaking Up a Relationship' Situation. The acting in this film was very convincing and clearly emphasised the complexity of the 'Breaking Up of a Relationship' Situation.

4. 'smile around the face'
The entire film is a close up of a mans face. The man and his wife appeared to have recently separated or divorced. The man picks up their kids and takes them to the park.

Opinions: I personally thought that this was a very creative and powerful film. The man appeared to be enjoying himself when he was with his children, which was very realistic and many of the audience will identify with the main character in this film.

5. 'I Never Eat Anything For Lunch'. Based on the Short Story 'The Luncheon' by W Somerset Maugham. A Student Made Film, made by Alfred Letley and Edward Buxton.
Edward Buxton and I made this short 5 minute film for Media Studies ALevel in 2007 when we were at Hampstead Fine Arts 6th Form College in North London. It is also on Youtube. A man and woman meet outside a cinema Foyer. The Man is a successful writer and the woman has put on 21 stone. They remember having lunch together. The next scene is in the past in an expensive Italian Restaurant. The man is a poor writer. The woman eats steak, mash potatoe and the man has salad. The woman leaves him in the restaurant and he has to pay the bill. The next scene is back in the Present where the woman has put on 21 stone.

Opinions: The Restaurant Scene was Personally my favourite part of this film for several reasons: Well Filmed, the acting was excellent, the crunching sound effects were extremely amusing. The First and Third Scenes were, in my personal opinion, weak because they were poorly directed.

6. 'Mack', This film can be seen as a 'Film Noir'. This film is basically about, 2 men having problems, they go to their male friends for support.

Opinions: Very Interesting switches between Monochromatic Filming and Colour Shooting. The Monochromatic Scenes remind me of an old fashioned Detective Novel and Detective TV Program.

7. 'Love'. This film is basically about a woman who tries to tell her female friend, 'I Love you'.

Opinions: I personally found this to be a very melancholy film. The piano music was lovely. The singing was also beautiful.

I did not completely understand this film. A friend of mine had recommend that I watch it, so I did. The scene at time period (2:20) was very sad, when the woman said, 'I love you', and the other person pushed the other woman away. In a way, the love was not reciprocated.

I personally think that this film was trying to present to the audience that love is a very powerful concept and that people should be careful when they use the phrase, 'I Love you'.

8. 'The Fantasist' from the site, 'Vimeo.com'. This is a Student Made film, made by Jessie Barstow and Ciaran O'Brien. This film is basically about a boy doing everyday activities. The Narrator of the film seems to be jealous. She explains what is going on.

Opinions: Personally, I thought that this was a very moving film. The Narrator was clearly frustrated and jealous. Some girls who watch this film will most likely agree and identify with the female narrator. The ending was very sad with the boy writing a letter. However, I was surprised by the sudden end to the film. I was expecting the boy to either see the girl or call the girl and end the relationship.

The Fantasist - 48hr Film Fest from Ciaran OBrien on Vimeo.

9. 'Window on the World' by Matt Steel. A Student made film, made by Matt Steel

Window On The World from impressmedia on Vimeo. I really liked the music and the lyrics to the main song. Both the music and the lyrics were very soothing and peaceful. They both helped to give this film atmosphere, shape, beauty.

When the man was singing, he sometimes referred to a colour wheel. That wheel was beautiful. I was impressed that this prop matched the lyrics 'Wheel' in the song.

The POV of a guy on a Skate Board at time periods (2:14 and 2:31) was, I thought, very impressive because it caught the action.

OCT / NOV 09 RE FORMATTING THE SCRIPT: 'What would you do for a pair of shoes?'

I found this a challenge to organise.

My Group wanted me to Re Format Scenes 2 and 5.

I had never used the Script Writing Software: 'Celtx' before. I made a film for ALevel called 'I Never Eat Anything For Lunch', my class mate and I wrote the script 6 or 7 times but we never used 'Celtx'. We were never told about it.

Scene 2, appeared to contain 3 shots / Scenes.

A. Clare outside the Jobshop.
B. Clare seen inside the Jobshop.
C. Clare back outside the Jobshop.

All of these scenes were at different times.

An Important Note = Scene 2C, 'Beautiful Shoes', they are very important to the actual film. The Film Makers have to convey Clare's desire for shoes. Show, don't tell.

Big Decision I faced about shooting Scene 2, either shoot it as two scenes or 3 scenes?

I chose to Re Format Scene 2 as 3 seperate scenes because visually the audience will see 3 different set ups:
Clare arriving
Clare inside Job center
Clare outside.

Celtx allowed the writers to add in fine details such as: Props, Sound Effects etc.

Oct/Nov 09 Porcess for Re Writing the Final Script

28th and 29th October 2009

The First and Second scenes were exciting to Re Write because my Group and I had made very good and understandable notes.

1- EXT. Grave Yard. MORNING

I included the dark sinister Grave Yard.

I wrote about: A group of Teenagers dressed in jeans, trainers and sweatshirts. I also wrote about one of the teenagers looking handsome and confident. He is wearing a leather jacket, and a huge Metal Watch on his left arm, his name is Ross. One of the other Teenagers is looking very nervous, he is sweating, his name is Tim. Another teenager wearing a baseball cap and an ear ring in his ear is holding a Clipboard with paper on it. His name is Harry.

I included: a disposable camera.

I wrote about: Harry being very organised and having a Clipboard. Tim being very nervous of Ross.

I wrote about: Tim giving Ross the Camera and Ross becoming puzzled.

Screen Fades.

2- EXT. Grave Yard. MORNING

I wrote about: Ross becoming very angry. Tim shaking with fear.

I explained that: Tim told Ross that Harry had told Tim to bring a disposable camera.

I showed that: Harry smiled nastily to himself without either Tim or Ross noticing.

I wrote about: Ross ordering Tim and Harry to get him a new camera right away.

Screen ripples to show the passing of time.

However, I found the Third scene where the boy steals the camera, a nightmare to write. I felt that my group and I had not explained this scene very well. I found myslef floundering on my own.

3- INT. Car Park. MORNING

I wrote about: A huge Car Park.

I included: Harry and Tim walking into a huge Car Park. Harry makes notes and Tim follows looking very nervous.

I wrote about: Harry and Tim steal a CCTV Camera and then leave.

Screen Ripples to show the passing of time.

I also had trouble writing about the Fourth and final scene. My Group and I had not made this section clear either. I also felt that I was floundering on my own.

4- EXT. Grave Yard. AFTERNOON

I included: Tim and Harry running fast into the Grave Yard.

I wrote about: Harry handing his Clip Board to Ross. Ross is impressed and happy with Harry.

I wrote about: Tim handing the new camera to Ross. Ross is pleased.

I wrote about: the warning from the camera saying: 'Battery Low'.

I wrote about: Ross becoming angry again at Tim and Tim becoming really nervous of Ross again.

I wrote about: Harry smiling nastily to himself without either Ross or Tim noticing.

I wrote about: Tim starting to cry and Harry smiling nastily and shaking his head.

Screen fades and the film ends.

Ideas:

Harry could be a nasty character. Trying to get Tim into serious trouble with Ross. Tim could be innocent. Ross and Harry could be seen as bullies.

1st November 2009

My Group and I met in town. I made nots on the rough outline of the Script:

Start:

2 groups of people.

In a Car Park.

Groups look like they are against each other.

Next Scene:

2 Characters holding guns.

Film in a Film.

'Action', guy taking stills with a Disposable Camera.

Wrong Camera

Confusion.

Guy with the Disposable Camera really wants to be a proper cameraman. He is eager to please. He runs off.

Next Scene:

Montage of all the cameras the guy is trying to get. He goes back to his house to get some money.

2 Scenes Interlinking:

1st = Cameraman A shows guy stealing a CCTV Camera.

2nd = Cameraman B shows Group getting a new Camera.

3rd = Cameraman A gets rugby tackled.

Cameraman B shouts 'Action'

The film ends

Details About Me

What do I hope to achieve from blogging?
I hope to achieve a greater sense of responsibility. I made a Film when I was in Year 13 at Hampstead Fine Arts 6th Form College, for my Media Studies ALevel Coursework. Its on Youtube called, 'I Never Eat Anything For Lunch'.

We had to construct Log Books which consisted of: Short Films, Conversations with Classmates and Professional Actors (used in my film), Photographs of Locations etc. Using 'Blogger' for this Module will most likely be a challenge. In College, Writing ideas in Film Log Books gave me great opportunities, space and time for me to experiment with different aspects of organising the construction of a film such as: space for conversations, space for emails etc. However, using 'Blogger', their will be less space for ideas / conversations.

What will people learn from reading my blogs? They will hopefully get a clear understanding of the learning curve, mistakes and achievements I will go through on this module.

Will this Module be helpful for me in the future? Yes I think so, because I would very much like to go and make Films and Documentaries. I see myself as a Film Producer, Director, Promoter and Organiser. This Module should give me a realistic insight into the world of Film Making.
